đźđčBehind The Artistđźđč
Aldo Londi (1911â2003), the visionary ceramist from Montelupo Fiorentinoâa town steeped in pottery tradition since the Renaissanceâdevoted over five decades to Bitossi Ceramiche, where he served as creative director and designed more than 1,000 pieces. Trained from the age of eleven at Fratelli Fanciullacci, Londi returned to Italy after World War II and infused Bitossi with a rare blend of technical mastery and artistic boldness. His most celebrated body of work, the Rimini Blu series (1955â1965), introduced a vivid Persian blue glaze and an embossed, abstract aesthetic that helped usher handcrafted ceramics into the modernist design dialogue. His collaborations with icons like Ettore Sottsassâwho regarded him as a mentorâalong with Piero Fornasetti, Matteo Thun, and Karim Rashid, further extended his influence. Though Londi explored a broad palette and forms, the whimsical clarity of his Rimini Blu and the stark minimalism of his later Arkitectura collection remain defining. His legacy endures in both ongoing production and the permanent collection at the MAIBâArtistic Industrial Bitossi Museum in Montelupo.
đïžBehind The 'Bitossi' Studiođïž
Founded in 1921 by Guido Bitossi in Montelupo Fiorentinoâa town synonymous with centuries-old ceramic traditionsâBitossi Ceramiche quickly evolved into a pillar of Italian design. Its most transformative chapter began with Aldo Londi, who joined as creative director following World War II and remained at the helm for over five decades. A master of form and glaze, Londi brought modernist clarity to artisanal methods, most notably with his Rimini Blu series: a mid-century triumph of texture, colour, and innovation that defined the studioâs aesthetic identity. Beyond Rimini Blu, Londi explored a diverse palette and playful sgraffito techniques, as seen in rare green-glazed lidded jars now prized by collectors. Bitossiâs reach expanded further through collaborations with avant-garde luminaries like Ettore Sottsass, Matteo Thun, and Piero Fornasettiânames that helped shape the postwar design canon. Today, Bitossi Ceramiche is not just a studio but a design institution, its 7,000-piece archive housed in the MAIB Museum and formally recognised in Italyâs Registry of Historical Companies. Whether through bold chromatics or sculptural silhouettes, Bitossi continues to shape the language of modern ceramics.Â
