Story Behind the Item

🔷 Patented by John L. Mason in 1858, jars bearing the “Mason’s Patent Nov 30th 1858” mark became a staple of American home preservation. While the embossed date refers to the original patent, most jars with this mark were made well into the early 20th century. The embossed cross—often mistaken for a symbol—was likely a mould identifier used by early manufacturers such as Hero or Consolidated Fruit Jar Co. This particular jar features a 1930s-era “Presto” glass-and-zinc lid, notable for its seal of approval from the Good Housekeeping Institute (Serial No. 2285), a mark of tested reliability in Depression-era kitchens.🔷
